This is a view of the hot water basins at the top of Te Tarata, more commonly known as The White Terraces. They were located next to Lake Rotomahana, near Rotorua. Along with the nearby Pink Terraces, they were one of the wonders of New Zealand and the World, until their dramatic destruction in a volcanic eruption in 1886. The eruption started on top of Mount Tarawera, seen in the painting, and then opened up an erupting fissure that spread down from the mountain and right under Lake Rotomahana and The White Terraces, blowing them into the sky. This painting is based on a historical photograph, so it is a reasonably accurate depiction.
