Along with the nearby Pink Terraces, they were one of the wonders of New Zealand and the World, until their dramatic destruction in a volcanic eruption in 1886. The eruption started on top of Mount Tarawera, seen in the painting, and then opened up an erupting fissure that spread down from the mountain and right under Lake Rotomahana and The White Terraces, blowing them into the sky. This painting is based on a historical photograph, so it is a reasonably accurate depiction.

I went to visit Orgh one time, out Takanini way. He was playing some really loud techno music on the stereo. It sounded like, “Boom, boom, boom, boom-boom boom boom boom...” After an hour of this it started getting pretty funny. The louder and more insistent the beat became, the funnier it was. Orgh said, “That’s what I call techno.”
While I was listening to the music, I took a pencil and doodled to the beat. Then I held up the drawing and said, “Now that’s what I call techno!”

Hot Water Beach is on the East Coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. Natural hot springs bubble up through the sand, but can only be accessed at low tide.
